And here's Richardson's comments regarding Obama's Tuesday speech -
"Senator Obama could have given a safer speech. He is, after all, well ahead in the delegate count for our party's nomination. He could have just waited for the controversy over the deplorable remarks of Reverend Wright to subside, as it surely would have. Instead, Senator Obama showed us once again what kind of leader he is. He spoke to us as adults... He appealed to the best in us."
One thing that helps to put Wright's comments in perspective is that what we all see on TV is about 20 seconds out of a 35 year stint of helping people, ministry to the poor, and building a church from a few people to approximately 8,000.
Sure the comments are divisive, and I would not feel good about using them. But as Obamba says, this is but one aspect of the man's ministry.
I agree with you. A friend sent out an email recently with a letter from David Moyer who basically said what you just said and then went on to tell a personal story of how Rev. Wright had been instrumental in David's efforts in birthing a church in Milwaukee. The letter emphasized that when we label a person based on sound bytes without looking at the whole person and his/her story, we are apt to misjudge. From what little I have seen, I think Obama has handled it all quite well both personally and professionally.
